G.I. Gurdjieff, a mystic of a fairly rational sort, taught that man as she is is asleep but has a possiblity of gradually becoming more awake. His method, called The Fourth Way, is a way of working to gain more awareness of what is one's actual situation as opposed to an imaginary one, as well as a means to go beyond that situation. His style of presentation combines a healthy dose of optimism and pessimism in relation to man's nature, lots of hard work and a wicked sense of humor.
